Andrew Gilchrist, SHDH Board Chair welcome speech to the Victorian Minister of Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas MP on Wednesday 23rd August 2023.

Andrew Gilchrist, SHDH Board Chair said in his address at the event that this new development will see a fantastic, purpose-built facility that will provide Emergency Services for our community.

Swan Hill District Health is two hours away from other major health services. We have a significant catchment area which includes towns on the other side of the mighty Murray River and an estimated population of over 30,000 people.

Our current facility sees around 16,000 presentations per year. Once completed, this facility will have the capacity to see up to 25,000 per annum.

This new development will enable us to better meet the demands of our community and support our purpose of achieving Connected Care, Best Experience.

We believe that this is one of the first steps to meeting the health service demands of our community well into the future. As a Board, we hope that this is the start of something bigger.

Mr Gilchrist invited Minister Thomas, we would love to welcome you back in 2026 to open the completed Emergency Department.

Mr Gilchrist thanked the Victorian Government for providing $35.7m in funding for this project and acknowledged the additional $17m in funding that came in this yearโ€™s budget. Without the Ministers intervention, this critical project may have been delayed for some time.

Thankyou Mary-Anne Thomas MP

Accompanied by Andrew Gilchrist, Chair of the SHDH Board, and Richard Nicholson, Director of Nicholson, the main construction builder, Minister Thomas delivered a short speech, officially announcing the construction commencement. She expressed her commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring the well-being of the community.

During her visit, Minister Thomas had the opportunity to meet with SHDH CEO Peter Abraham and Andrew Gilchrist, where they toured the hospital, met with staff, patients, and Mary-Anne expressed her gratitude for their dedicated service.  Peter and Andrew shared ambitions with the minister to expand the hospital beyond the emergency department, plus highlighted our needs around adult mental health services and challenges 2 hours from here.

This transformative project, made possible by government funding, signifies a significant step toward a brighter, healthier future for the Swan Hill community. The SHDH family looks forward to the construction journey ahead and the expanded services it will bring plus letโ€™s keep building!

SHDH EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT BUILDING RENDER DESIGNS RELEASED

We are extremely excited to share with our community, the much anticipated render designs for the SHDH Emergency Department Redevelopment!

This week, the Minister for Health, The Hon Mary-Anne Thomas released the render designs for the $48.7 million project, which will more than double the number of existing treatment spaces set in a new modern building, an innovative step in the right direction for Swan Hill District Health and the community we serve.

The designs reveal a first look at the new Emergency Department and associated clinical spaces which will create a welcoming atmosphere for patients and their families and will provide a new efficient working space for our staff. These designs have been developed and represented by SHDH Staff User Groups in conjunction with the project Consultant Team.

โ€œWe are delighted with the render designs that have been presented. They are the culmination of a lot of dedicated people working together to design the best possible space within the area we have been afforded.โ€ said Chloe Keogh, Acting CEO at Swan Hill District Health, โ€œWe are so excited to have reached this stage of the project and look forward to working with our staff and the community on providing a new state of the art Emergency Department for our region and beyond.โ€

6.05.22

The Emergency Department project has now moved into the Detailed Design phase of the project, which has seen the establishment of key user groups specific to Emergency, Community Health, Occupational Therapy and HARP, Pathology (Austin), Front of House, Security and Cafรฉ. Key staff representation through all sessions to date has been solid and well represented.

The Detailed Design Phase has an allocation of four (4) workshops for each user group identified. Each workshop is followed up with an Executive group session providing a summary of each workshop and key areas for discussion and decision. Our final Detailed Design Workshop was held last week, following this final week of workshops the consultant team anticipates agreement and sign off of this phase of the project from Swan Hill District Health.

We will then commence with some early works so as to decommission the existing building (old Nurses home) in preparation for the construction phase. Our Early works package includes temporary fit out for Pathology, Cafรฉ and Community Health staff and their relocation to off site locations for the duration of the project. The project team is currently working on the Construction phasing so as to ensure that while our build is in progress services on site are minimally interrupted.
